The B4 V2 Is Almost Here: Here's What We Changed, and Why
What the original got right – and where it needed work
The original B4 did a lot right. It gave small van owners a compact sliding bed for short-roof vans like the Berlingo, Kangoo, Dokker and VW Caddy.. It was strong, lightweight, affordable, and gave you a camper in a very tight footprint. But after two years of feedback, the same points kept coming up: it sat a bit too high, some of the storage was hard to reach, and assembly could be easier – especially when it came to trimming the bed for a clean fit, or getting doors and latches to line up properly. None of these were disasters. But in a small van, nothing is minor. So we fixed them.
4.5cm might not sound like much
At 33cm high, the B4 V2 is 4.5cm lower than the original. That might sound like a rounding error. In a short-roof van, it’s the difference between sitting up comfortably and sitting up with your neck bent. We also took 3cm off the length – not because we wanted to make the bed smaller, but because it was the right call. The shorter bed sits cleanly within VASP requirements without requiring bulkhead removal. And importantly, you don’t lose real sleeping comfort. The standard 161 x 112cm mattress still fits, giving a diagonal sleeping length of around 195cm. So even campers up to around 6ft can sleep diagonally in reasonable comfort – which is impressive for a compact L1 van setup.
Storage that actually works
The original B4 already had a lot of storage space. The problem was that some of it could be hard to reach – especially once the van was packed, the bed was made, or you were trying to grab something quickly without unpacking half your setup.
The B4 V2 changes that with a new side compartment.
Two hinged lids run along the length of the bed, beside the van wall. Open them up and you get a shared 30-litre storage compartment that’s perfect for tucking away essentials: cables, toiletries, head torches, books, chargers, cooking bits, or whatever else you want close at hand but out of sight.
It’s practical, but it’s also discreet. Nothing sticks out, nothing gets in the way, and your everyday gear stays hidden until you need it.
The Boxio corner section works differently: the lid lifts cleanly out, with no hinge, so there’s nothing in the way when you need access.
It’s not just more storage. It’s storage you’ll actually use.
The genius move: the D8 kitchen drawer
If there’s one accessory that really changes what the B4 can do, it’s the D8 kitchen drawer. In a small van, building a fixed kitchen inside usually means sacrificing too much living space. The D8 solves that problem by turning the rear of the bed into an outdoor kitchen. Pull it out from the back doors and you get a practical cooking surface exactly where you need it – outside the van, under the tailgate or rear doors, without cluttering up the interior. It’s the classic small-van trick: don’t try to squeeze everything inside. Put the right functions in the right places, then make them disappear when you’re done. The B4 V2 also remains compatible with the D6 side drawer and D7 end drawer, so you can keep things simple or build the setup into a more complete compact camper.
