Why our 2026 Mattress update matters
We solved most of the campervan-specific challenges with our first generation mattresses. They come in two pieces. One of those pieces is divided into two sewn sections, allowing it to fold neatly into a sofa-style arrangement during the day, then open out flat as part of the bed at night. The system works. The mattress folds properly. The seating position works. The bed setup is quick and clean. It has a great cover fabric. Practical, comfortable, durable, and washable.
But there was still one area where we knew we could make a meaningful improvement: the sleep feel.
Our previous mattress used 7 cm foam with a density of 28 kg per m³. That gave it support, structure, and the right level of practicality for a campervan bed. For 2026, we have kept that 7 cm supportive base and added a 3 cm memory foam comfort layer on top.
That takes the mattress from 7 cm to 10 cm total thickness. In simple maths, that is a little over 40 percent more thickness. But the more important point is where that extra thickness goes.
We have not just added more foam for the sake of saying “more foam”. That would be very easy. Add too much mattress and you start stealing headroom. Add too much bulk and the bed becomes awkward. Add too much softness and it stops working properly as a seat. There is always a balance. The 3 cm memory foam layer is the sweet spot. It is a relatively small sacrifice in headroom, but a significant step up in comfort.
The 7 cm base still gives the mattress its structure and support. The memory foam layer changes what you feel when you lie down. It moves the mattress away from that firm, practical campervan-bed feeling and closer to the kind of mattress you would happily sleep on at home.
