The Porsche You’ve Probably Never Heard Of (But Wish You Owned)

Van fans, gather round—this one’s for you.

Back in 1985, Porsche was gearing up for the Paris-Dakar Rally with their futuristic 959. It was fast. It was brutal. And it needed backup. Not just a support car—something that could keep up, carry a team, haul spares, and cruise across the desert in comfort.

So, what did Porsche build?

A van. But not just any van.

Enter the Porsche B32—a fire-breathing, ultra-rare support vehicle built on the VW T3 platform. It looked like a humble Transporter... until you looked under the skin. Porsche engineers dropped in a 3.2L flat-six from the 911 Carrera (yep, that engine), added a 5-speed 915 gearbox, limited-slip diff, beefed-up driveshafts, bigger brakes, and a spoiler lip. The result? A van that could hit 185 km/h (115 mph) and still carry your crew in style.

Only seven were ever built. One went to Porsche’s CEO at the time, Peter Schutz. Today, a B32 is worth well over €500,000—if you can even find one.

Why are we telling you this? Because if you drive a T6 (or any Transporter), you’re part of a legacy that includes one of the rarest, coolest Porsches ever made. So next time someone asks why you’re obsessed with vans, just tell them: “Because one of them once outran a rally car in the Sahara—and it had a Porsche badge on the front.”
